Heritage masonry project

16th-Century Bridge Masonry Restoration

A recorded heritage bridge project, originally presented within the Special Projects Heritage and Grade II listed category, involving the cleaning, repair and lime mortar pointing of brick tunnel masonry in a lake-and-waterfall setting.

LocationChelford, Cheshire
Building typeHistoric multi-arched brick bridge and tunnel structure
Heritage contextHeritage bridge project

The challenge

The original project record identifies a small 16th-century bridge with brick tunnels set against a lake and crescent waterfall. The recorded work addressed scale on the tunnel masonry, corroded bricks and the need for coordinated repair across both front and rear elevations.

The approach

The recorded masonry package combined brick cleaning and descaling, replacement of corroded brick, conservation lime mortar pointing to the tunnels, brick tinting, crack-stitching repair and brickwork repointing. The gallery and accompanying project films record the bridge setting, the tunnel masonry and work in progress beneath the arches.

The outcome

This published profile preserves the original project record as evidence of the defined heritage masonry scope. It presents the documented setting, methods, imagery and films without extending the record into unverified performance or guarantee claims.
